    Don’t trash the stache

    Hi All,

During Movember (the month formerly known as November) I’m growing a Moustache. That’s right I’m bringing the Mo back because I’m passionate about tackling men’s health issues and being proactive in the fight against prostate cancer.

To donate to my Mo you can either:

    1. Click this link https://www.movember.com/ca/donate/donate-details.php?action=sponsorlink&rego=1770496&country=ca and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account, or
    2. Write a cheque payable to the ‘Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada’, referencing my Registration Number 1770496 and mailing it to:

Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada

Donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

The money raised by Movember is donated directly to the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada who will use the funds to create awareness and fund research across the country into prevention, detection and treatment, with a goal to ending the threat of prostate cancer.

    Did you know:

    • Every year around 24,700 Canadian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 4,300 die of the disease, making it the number one cancer threat to Canadian men.
    • 1 in 7 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.
    • All men over the age of 40 are potentially at risk and should talk to their doctor about the disease and early detection. Prostate cancer is 95% curable if detected and treated early.

I’ll be posting progress photos throughout the month.

    Thanks for your support,

    Rick.

I commend your efforts Rick. My Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997, had it removed and has been cancer free since. Catching it early is so vitally important and creating awareness is one way to do this. Bravo!

    October update

Things have been pretty busy lately… we started a new eating plan to get back on track to healthy, and it’s taking a lot of time!  (and a lot of fridge space for all the produce we’re eating: LOADS of fruit and veggies)  So far, we’re both feeling a lot better.  I have lost 9.5lbs so far (in 2 weeks!).

Marshall has been having some bedtime issues…he fights bedtime so hard.  He tries everything.  Lately, he’s been on this kick where he tells us he’s hungry.  And who wants their kid to be hungry, right?  Except now we think it’s just a trick to get ust o come up to his room.  :(   It’s so hard to tell.  I think we’re going to have to get all tough-love on him and soon.  Every night it takes him over an hour of yelling at us and us going up and down the stairs before he finally settles down.

Lately, we have a new morning routine which is working well and Marshall seems to enjoy it.  I get up to shower, and turn on the Blue’s Clues (we got 9 tapes for $5 on kijiji!) and I lay out an outfit and a diaper.  At some point while I’m in the shower, Rick will change Marshall while he’s watching his show, and then he heads to the shower.  I go down and start the coffee etc. and when Blue’s Clues is over, Marshall will come down for some breakfast.  Sometimes it varies a bit, but this is kind of the standard.

Marshall loves to sing along with Steve on the show and even does his little “magic hands” at the end of the song *giggle*  super. cute.  Then the other day, he was playing with the little notebooks that mom gave him for hallowe’en, and he dropped one and goes “oopth!  I dropped handy dandy notebook!” SERIOUSLY.  How much cuter can he get???

He really likes doing his ghost noise and arms to “scare” people.

We’ll add some pics and videos soon.. he’s been so hilarious lately there’s lots to put up.

On Saturday, we went to a hallowe’en party at Fairlanes bowling alley, then to the playground, then to soccer, then to Dairy Queen for a treat with our friends and their son Will, and their nephews Aiden and Dawson, and then picked up daddy from his exam.  It was a big morning!

Sunday we went for a really long walk in Mapleton Park and saw birds and squirrels, then went to have some lunch at Grampy’s house for a visit.  I had to go into work for a few hours in the afternoon, and Marshall helped daddy carve the pumpkin in the evening.

Well that’s the update for now… I’ve been at a client’s with no internet for the last 2 weeks, so I have some catching up to do…  I’d better get to work!

Congrats on the commitment to healthier eating. And a big congrats on the weightloss! It is very time consuming preparing everything but it is so worth it when you realize how much better you feel when you’re eating fresh ingredients and you know exactly everything you are putting into your body. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to seeing the new pics and video. What is Marshall going to be for Halloween?

So my buddy J.C. and I recorded our pilot episode of what will start out as a biweekly be a weekly podcast on current events from a maritime perspective. This first run is fairly raw as we simply haven’t had a chance yet to refine what it will ultimately become. Have a listen and let us know what you think by e-mailing theshow@maritimejury.com.

Hey! Good work on the podcast. You guys have great radio voices and chemistry! I just wanted to let JC know that it is OK for him to use notes…your past radio experience was for Mt Alison and area listeners; now you potentially have the whole world listening….good for you!

      HAHAHAHAHAH……. HAHAHAHAHAH!!!

Oh crap. That was awesome! This takes me back. Broadband definitely takes you farther than the 60-watt transmitter. Out to the marsh and back boys!

Good on ya! You should get out the CHMA marketing plan and just change it to the Rick and JC Podcast.

    PEI trip

I just got back from a fun work conference on PEI today. My coworker took some pics with my phone (she had zippered pockets) so I offloaded a bunch of other pics too and they are here.  These are totally random pics from probably August or so until this weekend.

Marshall was a good boy for his daddy while I was gone.

When we arrived Sunday around 5 we went for a nice walk along a path that followed the water, and we came to a little island with a pioneer cemetary on it – it was neat.  Sunday night was a big dinner, our table was last, so that sucked for most of the table but luckily I was prepared and had snacks prior.  Monday all day was fairly boring conference type stuff, then a bunch of us from my office went horseback riding!  It was Tammy’s idea, but we were surprised how many of them agreed to go.  There were 8 of us in all.  Most of us wore our new “AC Group” red jackets.

Today we had a fairly short day, but a 2.5 hour drive back, so I arrived home at around 3pm and had a little time to get a few things done before the boys arrived home.  Marshall seemed happy to see me, but didn’t want to give me a hug regardless.

We tried him on his potty tonight and he’s pretty excited about it but he couldn’t pee or poo tonight.  Rick told me that this week he had a “controlled pee” in the tub, so seems like he’s getting close to being ready for the potty!

    Another busy weekend

Yesterday was my 2nd last friday off, and I had planned to continue my work of stripping/sanding the table and chairs and repainting them.  I was getting ready to take Marshall to his daycare, and suggested that we could go to Tim Horton’s for a donut (it was friday after all) and he was happy about this, but he didn’t want to get in the car.  “I want walk Tim Horton’s Mommy!”  It was so adorable, who could resist?

We had a lovely walk there.  He was bundled up in 2 sweatshirts…it’s really getting cold out there lately!  He held my hand most of the way and pointed out the fact that it was sunny out.  I agreed that it was a beautiful day.  M:”see moon mommy!”  because once when he was out on a walk with Gram they saw the moon in the daytime.  (we didn’t see it yesterday morning though).  We looked at the trees and how pretty and colourful they are.  We shared a 10-pack of timbits and I got a coffee to take back.

We were going to visit Thomas (the scholar’s choice near our place has a lot of nice thomas stuff on display for kids to play with) but they were closed.  We stopped at Colour Your World and they had some colouring pages and crayons and a great big table, and of course lots of giant books with pictures of mickey mouse and stuff in them which he enjoyed, while I discussed my project with the woman at the counter.

Our last stop was Irving, where we buy bananas.  Marshall picked them out (with my help) and brought them to the counter.  As we passed by the school (no sliding today, because the slides are wet), he wanted to walk along the cement partitions, so I held his hand and he counted his steps “one, two, thee, four, five, nine, ten!” and then we were home and off to Cathy’s house.

I ran some errands and had lunch with Rick and started sanding the table legs to smooth out the rough bits, and put a coat of primer and paint on the table, and painted the red cupboard as well.  The colour is called “double espresso” :)

Since the table was out of commission, we had pizza in the rec room for supper, and I put the 2nd coat on after Marshall went to bed.  Coat #3 went on this afternoon.  Project part A complete (part B is the chairs – ugh!)

Today I hit the gym, came home for breakfast, and then Marshall and I took a nice long walk.  He wanted to ride in the stroller, so I covered him up with blankets.  We stopped at the playground for a tour of the equipment, then back in until we got to the mall.  I did a little shopping, and dropped off Rick’s watch for warranty repair, and then we got a cookie for Marshall at Sobey’s, and stopped to see the hallowe’en house and an antique sale on the way back through our neighbourhood.

Marshall discovered he could climb the babygate that we put on his bedroom door for naps and bedtime.  I was waiting for him to settle and was painting a 3rd coat on, when I heard his voice a lot closer than usual.  He was in the stairwell!  The little monkey did it twice – so we finally put the gate up a little higher, and on an angle to make it a little harder.  Luckily that seems to be working for now, although he didn’t fall asleep for his nap until 330, which is a bit late.

We capped off today with a trip to Ponderosa for dinner with Grampy.  It was a full day with lots of fresh air.  Marshall ate more than I have ever seen him eat before.  He had most of a bowl of vegetable soup, some chicken tenders, french fries, I think a bite of Rick’s hamburger, milk, water, and a sundae!  his belly doubled in size.  *L*  It was so funny when we pulled back his chair to unbuckle his little booster seat and his belly was popped right out over the belt!  We were a little worried he might get sick, especially after we got home and he started trying to run off all that food.  He started running in circles saying something about a party in his room.  *giggle*

He did fall asleep by 9:15 I think tonight.  We may have to experiment with no nap this week to see if he goes to sleep earlier, because Mommy and Daddy would like a few nights of 9pm sleep.

Tomorrow afternoon I’m heading to PEI for a work conference thing until Tuesday afternoon.  Should be fun! (in the evenings)  It will be a fast week for me.  I’ve got a tax seminar thing Wednesday afternoon, and I’m off Friday. (back to working 5-day weeks after that), and then heading to Fredericton for Thanksgiving weekend with mom.

    Well I should get packing…

    kitty doppleganger

Bizarre coincidence – I was surfing kijiji and came across (randomly!) Marshall’s kittykat, brand new for $5.  SWEET.  I have him in my possession now, and he is pristine.  I had forgotten what he used to look like!
